Casey Haining is a Research Fellow in the Australian Centre for Health Law Research, Faculty of Business and Law, Queensland University of Technology.

Background

Casey graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Biomedicine, majoring in neuroscience. She went on to complete an Honours year with the University of Melbourne’s School of Population and Global Health where she was trained in qualitative methodology. Her thesis explored conscientious objection, particularly in the context of voluntary assisted dying. Casey has completed postgraduate studies in law, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Melbourne.

Casey has worked as a research assistant over recent years for both the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health and Melbourne Law School. She has also worked as a sessional academic as a tutor in health law. In addition to research, she has also worked in legal and policy roles, most recently as Advance Care Planning Australia’s National Policy Manager.

Casey came to QUT in 2021, as a Research Fellow in the End-of-Life Law team to work on a project evaluating the implementation of voluntary assisted dying in Western Australia. She balances this role with her research assistant appointment at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health.

Research interests

Casey is an interdisciplinary researcher interested in the intersection of law, policy and medicine. She has a strong research interest in all aspects of health law. She is particularly interested in end of life, abortion, genetics and conscientious objection.
