Dr Shelley Hopkins completed her PhD at the School of Optometry and Vision Science, QUT, in 2014. Her research investigated the visual characteristics of Queensland Indigenous and non-Indigenous school children. As part of her research, Shelley travelled to numerous primary schools in metropolitan and rural Queensland to perform vision assessments on over 600 children. Shelley has been involved with teaching and research at QUT since 2009, and in her current role as clinic coordinator, she oversees all of the children (and adult vision screenings) run by QUT. Shelley is a member of the ‘Children’s Vision Team’, a transdisciplinary research team that is exploring the impact of uncorrected vision impairment on school learning and achievement. This team was recently awarded a 2017 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. Shelley has maintained part time clinical practice, and also regularly provides optometry services to a number of outreach clinics in regional Aboriginal communities.
