Two QUIQ researchers proudly represented the group at the recent 2023 ASUM conference. The Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine conference this year was focused on ‘Ultrasound Intelligence’ and held in Sydney.
Dr Maria Antico demonstrated her expertise as the plenary speaker with the talk “Integration of AI in Ultrasound Imaging: Current Landscape and Future Directions for Clinical Practice”.
Her talk gave an intuitive understanding of AI concepts in the context of medical image analysis, focusing on ultrasound imaging applications. This highlighted the specific ways AI in sonography practice can empower sonographers and sonologists to streamline their workflow, enhance diagnostic accuracy and contribute to improved patient care.
This was of particular interest to the audience who were intrigued to find out more about expanding medical ultrasound into robotics, wearable technologies and the personalised patient monitoring that comes with it. While Sonographers and Doctors alike can appreciate the benefits that AI will bring to the field, its the dedication, passion and innovation from prominent leaders like Maria that make the changes happen.
Maria shows how her research is collecting and curating data for training AI models whilst establishing a gold standard for algorithm evaluation and contextualising the results within the broader clinical assessment.
Dr Chris Edwards, renowned for his contributions to the teaching and advancement of ultrasound, delivered a captivating presentation on “Ultrasound Derived Fat Fraction”.
Technology such as UDFF can make a significant difference in quantifying the levels of fat in the liver, which in this case, can be displayed as simply as a percentage % fat. Chris’ presentation helped to clarify the concepts behind the technology, such as backscatter and attenuation. His work enables sonographer’s to better understand the technology they could work with and break-down the barriers between research and clinical translation.
Congratulations to Dr Antico and Dr Edwards on their well-deserved recognition at this prestigious national conference.
