Grant success for our research team in Liver Fat Quantification

Pre-launch gathering of the research team at Herston Imaging Research Facility

Congratulations to Dr Edwards and the research team behind our Ultrasound Liver Fat Quantification project. Their research has been awarded the Australasian Sonographers Association Research Grant! This is available to support and facilitate sonographers to undertake new research that contributes to the sonography practice. Specifically, this funding supports members to undertake quality research which will then lead to publications and contribute to the evidence base of sonography.

This new study in collaboration between QUT (Queensland University of Technology) School of Clinical Sciences and the hepatology team at the PA hospital, Queensland Health – MetroSouth, with the imaging partners Siemens Healthineers, is investigating advanced ultrasound quantification methods to measure liver fat (steatosis). Ultrasound-based liver fat quantification is a non-invasive method based on attenuation and backscatter properties of the ultrasound beam. The key objective of this project is establishing a robust imaging protocol and demonstrating ultrasound as a dependable alternative to MRI to estimate liver fat percentage.
