Integrating AIoT for Smart City Development: Cybersecurity, Ethical Considerations, and Implementation Framework for Australian Local Governments
PhD Research Summary:
Cities, particularly smart cities, are increasingly adopting Internet of Things (IoT) technologies like sensors and cameras, and leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance urban management and services. The integration of IoT data with AI analytics, known as AIoT, has become increasingly popular across various urban domains. However, the widespread use of AIoT presents significant challenges, including the management of large volumes of data, cybersecurity risks, and ethical considerations related to the handling of sensitive information such as images and personal data. This PhD research addresses these critical issues through a two-pronged approach: first, by developing an AIoT platform as a demonstration project within the ArcGIS ecosystem, and second, by thoroughly investigating the challenges and implications associated with the deployment of both the newly developed AIoT platform and similar existing AIoT platforms in smart cities. Overall, his research will provide valuable insights and practical solutions to support the responsible and effective integration of AIoT technologies in smart cities, ensuring they contribute to safer, more efficient, and ethically sound urban environments.
