WS2 investigates evolving policy responses to RGAI products and markets from peak research advisory bodies, universities and academic publishers via desk and field research. The desk research component of WS2 comprises ongoing analyses of 1) policy documents and position statements related to the uptake of RGAI from peak bodies and interested stakeholders, including universities and industry groups and 2) how publishers respond to these tools, including how their use by researchers and universities is managed through contractual arrangements. These analyses aim to capture the evolving stakeholder responses to authorship, the ownership of ideas, and strategies around the assignment and licensing of Intellectual Property in research outcomes.
The field research component of WS2 contextualises the codified policy and position responses by capturing how members of the academic publishing industry and research advisory bodies—both in Australia and internationally—are discussing RGAI technologies and framing their organisations’ policy responses and industrial strategies. These perspectives are captured via interviews with representatives from major academic publishers and national and international research advisory bodies, and through conference ethnography conducted at international industry conferences dedicated to the academic publishing industry. This work provides further critical context regarding current discussions about the industrial and institutional impacts of RGAI.Â
