Earth and Marine Science researcher Brett Lewis has been working on a citizen science project with students from Iona College to look at how the corals in Moreton Bay (marginal reef) have adapted to human influence on the environment – and how the corals of the Great Barrier Reef and all reefs globally can survive the stress of global warming and the increasing influx of sediment both it and urban development are causing. Moreton Bay is a great location for the work as it is a ‘natural laboratory’ for corals living next to a major urban centre and in the cooler waters of the subtropics, south of the Great Barrier Reef.
