Access a full curriculum of rhythm and movement sessions to support self-regulation and positive behaviour for children aged 2-8 years.
Background
RAMSR (Rhythm and Movement for Self-Regulation) is a program for young children that aims to support their attentional and emotional regulation skills, as well as mental flexibility, inhibition, and working memory (the executive functions).
The program was first designed and piloted in 2016 by Associate Professor Kate Williams (Queensland University of Technology) and her music therapy and early childhood music education colleagues. It is based on a number of neurological areas of research, including music therapy, the cognitive benefits of music education, and self-regulation development.
Evidence from two studies have found that children who engage in RAMSR with their educators have improved emotional, cognitive, and behavioural self-regulation. Educators involved in the study had no music background at all but gained skills and confidence in using these activities with children.
Workshop Overview
The 5-hour workshop including morning tea and lunch aims to teach participants how to use the RAMSR program including simple rhythm and movement activities to support positive behaviour for children aged 3-6 years old. The workshop will be delivered by a RAMSR Master Coach who is an early childhood researcher and very interested in young children’s social-emotional development and wellbeing. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to lead the full RAMSR program which can be programmed across a whole year as suits the local context. Participants will also build important capabilities and knowledge in self-regulation development, and the ways rhythm can be used as part of their practice to support attention, regulation, and overall brain development.
Workshop participants will be provided with:
- four full 15-20 minute RAMSR sessions plans to create a program lasting 12 months as desired
