Yulin is currently a Maths, Science and IT Educator (Senior Lecturer) within the Student Success Group (SSG), teaching statistical data analysis in the areas of biomedical sciences, data science, engineering, and business. Yulin received his bachelor's and master's degrees in transportation engineering from Tongji University in Shanghai, China in 2005 and 2008 before joining QUT to pursue a Ph.D. on public transport planning and transit user behaviours. After obtaining his Ph.D. in 2013 and a short period in engineering consultancy, Yulin came back to QUT in 2015 to follow his passion in teaching and research as an academic.
Yulin was an Assistant Learning Support Coordinator within QUT STIMulate in 2016-2017, a successful university-wide support for learning service that received the national AAUT program award and two international Wharton Reimaging Education awards in 2016 . As a founding member of the SSG since 2018, Yulin has been actively engaged in whole-of-institution approaches to support for learning in higher education, placing students at the centre, enabling them as they design their journey towards academic or industry future states.
Yulin’s work in SSG focuses on support for learning and teaching of applied mathematics and developing learning analytics initiatives for student success at QUT. Based on his innovative practice in teaching statistics, Yulin was recognised as Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in 2015, and he was selected to present in 2016 QUT Sessional Teaching and Reflection Showcase (STARS). Over 2017 and 2018 Yulin supported hundreds of sessional academics across QUT with his series of Timely, Short and Useful Email and Workshops, when being appointed as Sessional Academic Success Advisor within QUT Sessional Success Program, which received the 2016 AAUT program award. Yulin was awarded Senior Fellowship of the HEA in 2020 and Associate Fellowship (Indigenous) of the HEA in 2022.
Besides teaching practice Yulin also has great enthusiasm in research in multiple areas across disciplines including innovation in statistics education, peer support for learning in higher education, financial literacy and education, learning analytics in higher education, organisational learning and leadership, innovative methods in tourism and travel research, etc. Yulin has co-authored over 20 high quality peer-reviewed research articles. Yulin is also a voluntary reviewer for multiple high impact (e.g., Q1, A*) academic research journals. Yulin is currently a member of the Editorial Boards of Leisure Studies (Q1), Journal of Tourism Futures (Q1), Frontiers in Sustainable Cities, and Frontiers in Sustainable Tourism.
