Dr Bruggemann holds B.Eng., M.Eng. and PhD degrees in aerospace avionics engineering. His early work included GPS precision navigation and timing development for satellites and rockets, where he developed Australia’s first GPS receiver for space with the Cooperative Research Centre for Satellite Systems. This was followed by researching low-cost primary GPS and inertial multi-sensor navigation system architectures for general aviation with Airservices Australia and GPSat Systems.

From 2009-2014 he researched and developed critical and enabling flight control and planning technology for the Fugro ROAMES project, enabling reliable, accurate and efficient low-altitude airborne surveys of large-scale (150,000 km long) powerline infrastructure networks  air using high-resolution laser scanners. This saves $40 M per annum to Queensland and also operates internationally.  This work has been assessed as having high impact (their highest rating) in the Australian Research Council’s 2018 Engagement and Impact exercise. The work also contributed to the ROAMES system winning a UK Network Game changer Award, a US International Edison Award, a Queensland Spatial Excellence Awards, JM (Mac) Seriser Award.

He has held a QLD State Government Science and Innovation Accelerate Fellowship grant sponsored by Boeing Defense which investigated integrating multiple UAVs into civil airspace for commercial and societal benefit.  He is currently researching uncertain and complex integrated dynamical systems with Defence Science and Technology. He has worked on various applied and commercial research projects including cost-benefit analysis for satellite navigation systems,  airborne collision avoidance, flight planning evaluation, data analytics for agriculture, and inverse optimal control. His research interests include automation and control systems, path planning and optimization, complex systems and Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM).
