Dr Stephen Corporal is an Eastern Arrernte man with close family connections to many other First Nations people, born in Townsville and lives in southeast Queensland. He was involved in counselling and welfare work, and as a Board of Director on various organisations in the Brisbane Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community for many years before completing his Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) degrees at UQ in 2003. He was the 2003 SBS Valedictorian and President of the Social Work Students Association (SWSA). He was the Indigenous Postgraduate Representative for JCU Postgraduate Student Association and the IPLO on CAPA where he completed a Masters of Social Policy. Stephen was President of the Social Work Alumni at UQ from 2006-07.
Stephen worked as the Senior Student Support Officer at the UQ Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit from 2005 to 2009 then the Indigenous Recruitment Manager the UQ School of Medicine until 2011. Stephen then worked at the Griffith University Health Executive to develop and implement a strategy to increase recruitment and retention of First Nations students. He worked as a Lecturer at Human Services and Social Work, Griffith University researching, lecturing and supervising students.
Stephen recently completed a PhD titled “Identity, roles, and expectations influence on Indigenous university students when building the Indigenous health workforce” at Griffith University and a Grad Cert in Indigenous Leadership and Research at University of Melbourne. He is a current deputy Chair of the Indigenous Allied Health Australia (IAHA) NT WD. Stephen has worked at QUT as a Sessional Tutor in Health Needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and a Research Fellow at Centre for Data Science. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow with the University of Melbourne and a Visiting Fellow with the QUT Centre for Data Science.
