Sam was a PhD researcher with the QUT Centre for Robotics (QCR) supervised by Doctor Feras Dayoub and Associate Professor Niko Sünderhauf. In 2019 Sam graduated from his Bachelor’s in Computer Science with First Class Honours. During his Honours project, Sam witnessed first-hand that even the best vision models were often more fragile than they first appeared, motivating his transition to a PhD with the centre.
Sam’s work now focuses on uncertainty estimation for deep-learning enabled camera-based visual perception. Of particular interest is the utilization of characteristics specific to robotics platforms (egocentric flow and embodiment) to improve uncertainty estimates. He completed his PhD in 2024.
