Phil graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science – Computing from QUT in 1992. He then worked in software development, data architecture and management in a range of industries including transport logistics, geographical information, financial services and government.
He is currently pursuing his PhD in Machine Learning at QUT. His research interest is in improving sample efficiency of learning systems through engineered inductive bias and system 2 reasoning. This has involved investigation into graph neural networks, game playing, deep reinforcement learning and graph search algorithms.
Outside of research, Phil spends his time adding finishing touches to his owner-built house, gardening and playing tabletop roleplaying games.
