Fabio is currently pursuing a PhD at QUT in the field of autonomous navigation in unstructured environments. In a joining effort between QUT and CSIRO Fabio aims to enable robots to navigate in densely vegetated environments, such as forest or agricultural settings, by allowing the UGV interactions with the environments. This topic reflects some of Fabio’s research interest in multi-modal perception, mapping, navigation, and planning.
Before joining QUT as a PhD student Fabio in May 2020 Fabio worked at the Autonomous Systems Lab at ETH Zurich. In his role as Research Engineer, he was part of a small team pushing the boundaries of autonomous multi-rotors. In his time at ASL he developed and deployed novel and cutting-edge planning and mapping for autonomous drones in the context of the DARPA Subterranean Challenge, team Cerberus, and also participated at the MBZIRC Challenge in Abu Dhabi.
In 2018 Fabio received his M.Sc. Mechanical Engineering from ETH Zurich and successfully published his Master Thesis, in collaboration with CISRO and the Autonomous Systems Lab at ETH Zurich, “OVPC Mesh: 3D Free-space Representation for Local Ground Vehicle Navigation”.
