For almost 20 years Daniel has been working at the forefront of theoretical foundations and applications of systems and control, with special emphasis on networked cyberphysical systems. He has co-authored a book, over 240 publications in top journals and conferences, and holds three commercial patents. Throughout his career, he has received a number of prestigious research awards, most prominently the 2018 George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award. This prize recognizes the best paper published during the past two years in the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, the finest journal in systems control. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. Daniel has attracted over 2 million dollars in competitive research funds within Australia and Germany since 2009.

Academic Experience:
Daniel received Ingeniero Civil Electrónico and M.Sc. degrees from Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Valparaíso, Chile, in 2000, and in 2005 the Ph.D. degree from the University of Newcastle in Australia.  Upon being awarded the PhD degree, he held several research positions at Newcastle, including a five-year fellowship from the Australian Research Council. The outlook of being in a position where he can have a more significant impact on University endeavours and society motivated him, in 2015, towards taking up an offer to establish and lead the Chair in Automatic Control at the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics of Paderborn University in Germany. Since 2020 he has been Professor in Cyberphysical Systems at the School of Electrical Engineering and Robotics, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia.

Research Areas:
Daniel was drawn towards control systems due to the wide applicability of systems thinking and feedback. Systems control is about the interaction of the digital and the physical environment. Its power derives from employing suitable abstractions which allow one to design systems beyond disciplinary boundaries. His main focus has been on the design of networked cyberphysical systems with feedback. In particular, he has contributed to the understanding and development of:

  • estimation and control using wireless networks
  • event-triggered and self-triggered operation
  • security and privacy of cyberphysical systems
  • cyberphysical human systems
  • control of power converters

To be able to solve complex problems, he has pursued cross-disciplinary research projects with colleagues from Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, and from Behavioural Economics.
