Associate Professor Aaron McFadyen’s research is now embedded in Australia’s automatic drone flight approval systems under trial at multiple Australian airports. The ambition to have robots around us in our everyday lives is a challenging one, particularly in the conservative Aviation industry.
Aaron has combined innovative new technology with strong industry partnerships (Airservices and CASA) to translate research into a scalable solution that helps ensure safe, consistent, and low-cost drone approvals in airports – unlocking the potential for this exciting new technology. Since online, many automated digital authorisations for commercial drone operators have been approved using the technology – a real-world outcome, developed with industry and impacting the entire drone sector.
This work has been recognised international and domestically through multiple awards including the 2022 ATSE Batterham Medal.
