Dr Aurélie Benfield graduated with a Bachelor of Biotechnology Innovation with Honours (2005) and a PhD in Plant Biotechnology (2009) from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). She has been a senior research assistant in the laboratory of Prof David Craik at the Institute of Molecular Bioscience (IMB), studying cyclic peptide processing and evolution in plants. She moved to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) to work with Dr Donald Gardiner studying Fusarium pathogens using reverse genetics and biochemical analyses. She then moved back to the IMB to work with Dr Sónia Henriques to focus on small cyclic cell-penetrating peptides and their mode of action using cell biology and biophysical methodologies. Since the Henriques lab moved to QUT based at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) in 2018, Aurélie’s added research focus is on decoding the lipid composition of cancer cell membranes to develop new peptide therapeutics. She has a postdoctoral research fellow position since 2021 and is co-supervising 3 PhD students.
