A/Prof Craig O’Neill joined QUT in 2023, and has a background in geophysics and rock mechanics, and a long research record in planetary exploration, and deep planetary interiors. He received his PhD from The University of Sydney in (2004), and undertook a postdoctoral at Rice University, in collaboration with LPI, on a NASA-funded project on Martian volcanism.

He returned to Australian in 2006, receiving ARC-funded Australian Postdoctoral and Future Fellowships in geodynamics, and founded and directed the Macquarie Planetary Research Centre (2015-2021). He worked in industry from 2021-2023 largely on renewable energy projects, geophysics, and rock mechanics, returning to academia and QUT in 2023 as an associate professor in geophysics and remote sensing. Craig has published fundamental works on planetary evolution, impacting, and tectonics, surface volcanism, and core structure.

He has experience developing satellite and UAV geophysical payloads, and subsurface characterisation of planetary crust using remote satellite datasets, geophysics and geomechanical approaches.
