PV+Storage Operation and Economics in distribution systems (PVST)

This project was undertaken and completed at Aalborg University, Denmark.

Overview

The combination of photovoltaic (PV) systems with energy storage provides benefits to the residential system owners such of lower electricity bills and a greener electricity supply. In this project the impact of PV + storage was be studied from a technical and economic viewpoint for both grid operators, market retailers, as well as for customers.
The main objectives of the project were: (1) operational strategy and hardware/software platform for the residential owners (2), recommendations to distribution grid operators to support PV + storage customers, (3) recommendations to retail market design for overall profitability.
Aalborg University was leading a work package addressing objective (1), on the design and implementation of the optimal operation strategy and necessary algorithms to control the PV and battery system behind the meter.

Outcomes

  • Design and implementation of MPPT and grid feeding control system for industry partner’s converter (to be added to UPS control)
  • Developed a rapid control prototyping structure using Simulink, TI F28379D controller, and OPAL-RT OP4510
  • Development of a test platform for PV-batterv systems.
