Meet the 2018 research team

In 2018 we have welcomed three academics to the team.

‘Private Literacy Tutoring: A Sociology of Shadow Education’ continues to be led by Chief Investigator Karen Dooley. In 2017 Chief Investigator Cathie Doherty took up a position at the University of Glasgow and is now a Partner Researcher on the project. We are pleased to announce that the position of Second Chief Investigator has been filled by Dr Rebecca English from the School of Teacher Education and Leadership. Dr English brings a wealth of research expertise on education systems and schooling alternatives, as well as a background in business and marketing. Since joining the team, Dr English has made a valuable contribution to the shape and direction of the project.

We were fortunate to have visiting scholar Adjunct Professor Delphine Odier-Guedj from the University of Quebec at Montreal work with us until her return to Montreal in June. Professor Odier-Guedj’s expertise on inclusive education has made a valuable contribution to our understanding of some issues raised in interview data regarding the use of private tutoring for children with learning disabilities. We will continue data analysis with Professor Odier-Guedj and develop joint publications. We thank Professor Odier-Guedj for her generous, ongoing contributions to our project.

Finally, we have welcomed Adon Berwick in the role of Senior Research Assistant. He works closely with CI Dooley and Adj. Prof. Odier-Guedj on data relating to parents’ use of private tutoring to support children with learning disabilities. Adon is currently completing his PhD at QUT.

At this time, the research team is:

Chief Investigator Associate Professor Karen Dooley
Second Chief Investigator Dr Rebecca English
Partner Investigator Adjunct Professor Cathie Doherty
Senior Research Assistant Elizabeth Briant
Senior Research Assistant  Adon Berwick
Collaborative Partner Adjunct Professor Delphine Odier-Guedj
