Action Research and Project Approach: Journey of an Early Childhood Pre-service Teacher and a Teacher Educator

  • This paper reports on an action research project undertaken by a pre-service teacher in a kindergarten classroom.
  • The pre-service teacher focused on enhancing her questioning and classroom management strategies, and to strengthen the students’ scientific inquiry skills.
  • The pre-service teacher led students through three phases of action research through a study of the rain and water cycle, designed to deepen their inquiry skills and share their learning.
  • To develop her questioning and classroom management skills the pre-service teacher reflected on video recordings of her teaching, in conjunction with feedback from her school-based mentor teacher and university-based mentor.
  • The pre-service teacher and university-based mentor encourage others to use action research to support both students’ and teachers’ development.
