The fluid nature of action research

  • This article discusses the cycle of action research and the ever-changing nature of the processes involved.
  • Action research provides opportunities to research and deepens understanding of practice in educators own context.
  • A curiosity to understand a key interest or concern within a service leads to educators developing a broad theme to investigate.
  • A broad question may be broken down into smaller elements of inquiry and shared between staff members.
  • The documentation process is a cycle of watching, questioning, gathering evidence, critically reflecting and planning the next course of action before commencing again.
  • Action research is not done in isolation, it is collaborative and allows all staff to connect and work together for a common cause.
  • The action research cycle provides an ongoing tool for improving practice, with each answer generating a new question and providing an ongoing commitment to change and improved quality.
