Digital beef supply chain
Project dates: 02/10/2017 - 25/05/2018
The aim of the Australian Beef Cattle Digital Supply Chain Proof of Concept (PoC) is to test if a digital platform has the ability to transform the Australian Beef Industry through increased transparency of supply and demand. The Project Team is working with selected Industry Participants to collate data and shape the digital platform. Remotely sensed spatial data is to be used to estimate the volume and state of biomass (pasture) on farm. Given medium and long-term rainfall outlooks, dynamic mathematical models of biomass growth, cattle weight gain and carcase quality will provide forecasts to cattle producers out to 12 or 18 months. This forecasting integrated into the digital platform will facilitate producers in securing supply contracts with processing plants well in advance of current industry standards, allowing more optimised planning of cattle production, and a more reliable and stable supply of cattle to processing plants.
