Review of deterrence theory and enforcement case studies

This project reviewed the latest evidence of deterrence theory and provided recommendations of optimal enforcement approaches and how these can be supported by education and awareness activities. The project included a systematic review to examine the international literature which has been published about deterrence theory, five case studies of countries that are leaders in global-best practices in road safety and have implemented various enforcement countermeasures and supporting public education campaigns to discourage risky driving behaviours (i.e., Ireland, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom, and Australia), with recommendations focussing on optimal enforcement approaches for Ireland and how these approaches can be supported by education and awareness activities.
