Professor Yuri Estrin

Associated Member, Monash University

Summary

Yuri Estrin received a MSc degree in physics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Engineering (1969), followed by a PhD degree from the Institute of Crystallography, Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1975) and a habilitation from the University of Technology, Hamburg-Harburg (1986). He held professorial positions in Germany and Australia, as well as adjunct appointments in several countries. Currently, he is a Professorial Fellow at Monash University in Melbourne and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Australia in Perth. His research interests are in a broad area of physical metallurgy and design of materials, with a special emphasis on architectured materials, notably on topological interlocking structures. Prof. Estrin has authored or co-authored more than 550 research papers (H index: 92 by Google Scholar; 74 by Web of Science). For his scientific achievements, Prof. Estrin was elected to the Australian Academy of Science. He received numerous international awards including an Alexander von Humboldt Award, a Helmholtz International Fellow Award, an Excellence Award from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), a Staudinger-Durrer Lectureship (ETH Zurich, Switzerland), and a World-Class University Professorship (Seoul, Korea). Professor Estrin currently holds a Senior Visiting Scientist appointment at MPICI in Potsdam, working together with several members of the Institute and the MPIQC.
