Professor Travis Klein is the Director of the Centre for Biomedical Technologies and the leader of the Cartilage Regeneration Laboratory (CRL) at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

The Centre for Biomedical Technologies aims to deliver better health in our lifetime, by improving how we treat complex medical cases stemming from injuries, infection and age-related issues. Our research and development focuses on better patient treatments and quality of life into the future using regenerative approaches, robotics and artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing to expand surgical possibilities and reduce complications.

The ultimate aim of the CRL is to help develop long-term regenerative therapies for treating cartilage defects, including osteoarthritis. To help understand chondrogenesis and joint pathologies, and engineer functional tissues, Travis’ group is developing:

  • functionalised biomaterials
  • 3D cell culture systems
  • biofabrication approaches
  • mechanical stimulation technologies

In addition, the CRL works towards advancing imaging technologies for monitoring changes in native and engineered tissues. One particular area of interest has been in understanding the differences between chondrocytes and extracellular matrix of different depth zones, and recapitulating these in vitro.
