About us

The focus of the Mathematics in Medicine (MiM) research group is on the development and improvement of mathematical and computational methodologies in medicine, particularly around the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of diseases. Our members are from the School of Mathematical Sciences and School of Computer Science at QUT.

Mathematical and computational tools are transferable to many applications in medical mathematics. The core themes of the research group are

  • tissue and biomedical engineering
  • imaging analysis and modelling
  • modelling of human diseases
  • molecular targeted therapies.

The objectives of the MiM group centre around capacity building and scientific output within the research themes:

  • to develop new cross-disciplinary collaborations between mathematicians, experimentalists, and clinicians with interests in our research themes that will result in high-impact publications
  • to expand the capacity of the MiM group by forging synergistic links between researchers in our school and by recruiting HDR students (internally and externally)
  • to improve the diagnosis and treatment of diseases through mathematically-driven medical advances that alleviate human suffering
  • to develop new mathematical and computational methods inspired by applications in medicine that may be used by others in the mathematical community
  • to increase the awareness of mathematics as a tool for use in clinical applications amongst the biomedical community at QUT and throughout Australia.

The MiM group hopes to fill a gap in the current structure of research centres at QUT and more broadly within Australia. If you are interested in potentially collaborating with one of our members or have an interesting problem you would like to propose we would be thrilled to hear from you. If you are a student interested in research projects, please reach out to us or contact one of our research team.

We hope to establish new connections both within our research group and with experimental, clinical and industrial partners with interest in medically motivated problems. Our belief is that through developing these connections we will be able to create impactful research that may help to further disease understand, drug development and experimental design.

If you wish to find our more about our research, are interested in potential collaborations or are a student curious about research opportunities, please contact us. The members of the research group are affiliated with a number of sectors within the QUT community including the Centre for Data Science, School of Mathematical Sciences and the Faculty of Science.
