Background

Fawang Liu is a Professor in the Applied and computational mathematics at Queensland University of Technology. He received his PhD from Trinity College, Ireland in 1991. Heis an international recognised expert in the fields of numerical methods and theoretical analysis for fractional dynamical systems.  He has published over 340 papers. In 2012, he won the prestigious Mittag-Leffler Award for his outstanding contributions to the fields. He has supervised more than 30 PhD  and MPhil students, and 40 visiting fellows on the fields.  He has been named in the 2015-2021 Thomson Reuters lists of Highly Cited Researchers.

Research

Professor Liu is a leading researcher in numerical methods and numerical analysis of fractional differential equations. He has made important contributions to research in:

  • Numerical methods and analysis of fractional differential equations
  • Anomalous diffusion models with application to medical imaging
  • Fractional dynamical models arising from biological systems
  • Parameter estimation for fractional dynamical models
  • Numerical methods in computational finance
  • Non-Newtonian modeling of multiphase fluid and multiscale materials, numerical analysis and simulation
  • Time, space, and time-space distributed-order differential equations to model ultraslow diffusion
  • Developing new computational models and effective numerical methods, such as finite element methods, finite control volume unstructured mesh methods, meshless methods, higher order finite difference methods for anomalous transport in the irregular shaped two- and three-dimensional geometries
  • Fractional dynamics models for application in signal filtering equations, including time, space and time-space fractional diffusion models.
  • Fractional Order HIV/AIDS Epidemic models
  • Seepage constitutive of coalbed methane based on fractional theory and moving boundary problems
  • Semiconductor device equations
  • Microwave heating problems
  • Gas-solid reactions
  • Singular perturbation problems
  • Saltwater intrusion into aquifer systems, particularly in numerical methods and theoretical analysis.

Additional information

Professor Liu has been invited to visit and present lecture series on fractional calculus in over 30 universities in China and USA in the last five years. His current invitation to present as an international teacher of excellence at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and the Chinese Ministry of Education will continue from 2016-2022. Along with over 340 journal publications, Professor Liu has published a book on Numerical Methods of Fractional Partial Differential Equations by Science Press, China, 2015. Details
The Honors and Awards Committee of the 5th Symposium on Fractional Differentiation and Its Application (FDA'2012) conferred the international academic award of Mittag-Leffler FDA Achievement Award to Adjunct Professor Liu. The FDA Award Committee conducts a ballot to select a recipient for the Award and selection is based on the cumulative contribution to the field of Fractional Derivative and Applications. The Award is to be made once every two years.
