The Initial Teacher Education And Teacher Professional Learning (ITEPL) Research Group addresses research into teacher education and teaching and learning more broadly in higher education contexts. This research group emerges at a critical time as the national discourse changes from teacher quality to the measurement of impact and the collation of longitudinal evidence on the effectiveness of teacher education. Contemporary debates on teacher education include varied ideas around what attributes, effectiveness, professional knowledge and outcomes teachers require; how teachers should be selected to become teachers; and how they should be assessed. Teacher education is increasingly held responsible for everything from falling PISA rankings, widening achievement gaps, lower student outcomes and even poverty itself. The ITEPL Research Group’s aim is to concentrate research on teacher education and professional learning.
