Reef monitoring

The REF team conducted a one week long joint operation with Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in multiple locations of Great Barrier Reef in February 2017. The hyper-spectral and ultra HD aerial surveys were augmented by AIMS underwater surveys. Preliminary results shows that the data allows for measurement and quantification of the condition of representative large coral reefs, as well as the creation of indicators for coral reef condition including benthic cover (ratio of coral, algae and sand), bleaching and calcification.

This investigation builds upon past research activities undertaken at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, where hyperspectral imagery captured by RPAS has been analysed using artificial intelligence techniques to create spectral signature banks of items of interest.
