What is REF?

The Research Engineering Facility (REF) is hosted within QUT’s Institute of Future Environments (IFE) and provides specialist, cross-organisational research engineering services. With a proud history in the provision of aerial services, REF supports QUT’s core strengths in energy technology research and development, as well as robotics and autonomous systems through design, engineering and operations of airborne, terrestrial and marine robots.

Launched in January 2017, REF consists of a broad range of capabilities, encompassing specialist programmers, designers, technologists, engineers, pilots and project managers, complemented with supporting infrastructure assets. REF’s primary focus is to provide cross-organisational research engineering services such as design, systems integration and data collection, management and processing.

REF is the custodian of QUT’s RPA Operators Certificate (CASA.ReOC.0466), allowing QUT researchers to safely and legitimately collect drone data from sites Australia-wide. It also operates a wide variety of robotics systems and sensors which enable and support research programs. Additionally, it manages and operates QUT’s pilot scale lithium-ion battery production facility, including Australia’s only electro-manufacturing room with zero humidity, and supports QUT’s applied superconductivity laboratory.
