The study was guided by the following research questions

  1. How do secondary teachers in regional and rural communities ensure improved academic outcomes for EAL students?
  2. What curriculum and pedagogical innovations utilise students’ existing linguistic resources to establish academic concepts and vocabulary in English?
  3. What are the outcomes for English as an additional language (EAL) students when teachers recognise and incorporate the students’ home language and culture into classroom teaching?
