Some of the young people in rural schools who speak languages other than English at home:
- have completed all of their schooling in Australia. Others started school in other locations and now attend Australian schools;
- speak one language with their parents and speak another with their siblings;
- only speak English in class, while others speak English in part-time jobs or other activities as well;
- are still very connected to their home country and visit often. Some others are worried that their home language is being forgotten and with this some of their ties to their home country;
- are aiming to get the results required to gain entry to university when they finish school. Others feel having two languages will help them to be employed.
