Welcome to the Home Languages in Schools (HLinS) websiteWelcome to this Home Languages in Schools website. The website is one output of a joint project between Queensland University of Technology and The Queensland Department of Education. The project was funded through the Department of Education Horizon Scheme and has come to be known as the Home Languages in Schools project. The project was born out of the interests of a school principal and teachers at a rural secondary school with growing numbers of English as an additional language students (EAL) from migrant backgrounds. The project was a collaboration between school leaders, teachers, students and their families, and researchers as well as a cultural broker. It aimed to highlight the benefits of a strengths-based approach to incorporating students’ home languages into teaching and learning in schools. Valuing students’ language resources is one way to connect families and schools for the purpose of improving outcomes for all students. First language knowledge and skills are the foundation for learning a second or additional language, including the language of schooling. This website provides an overview of the project and a list of strategies, tips and resources for teachers and families interested in the benefits of students’ home languages for school performance. |
