Hear from Teacher 4
“I’m Indigenous as you all know. Just culture in general I just love learning about cultures and as a young Indigenous student when I was growing up at school, we weren’t allowed to speak our language at school at all”
“Having English as my second language… but when I was at school it was really hard”
“I can remember when someone would talk about Indigenous culture when I was at school it was always negative, always horrible and I’d think goodness gracious”
“Just knowing that our culture can die if you don’t practice it and I think that’s why I wanted to do [this project]. I have other students from other different cultures, and I try to get to know the kids and a bit of their culture”.
“I think the whole world will work better if we all got to know each other a bit better and understand”
“I can sort of empathise with some of you and how you get through school and your own culture not being valued at all”.
“When someone did say something nice about my culture when I was at school, it gives you that – a bit of pride… and I like to give that to my kids in the class too”.
