Playful Placemaking & Wayfinding in the Queensland Children's Hospital

Playful Placemaking & Wayfinding

This project is focussed on the Entertainment Precinct on Level 6 of the Queensland Children’s Hospital, an important non-clinical area for supporting children and families who are attending the hospital for medical appointments and treatment. This design research project occurs at the intersection of creativity and health, drawing on disciplines of public art and illustration, environmental graphic design for wayfinding, and stakeholder engagement.

Who was involved?

In consultation with industry partners Lynne Seear and Matthew Douglas from the Queensland Children’s Hospital, and representatives from the Entertainment Precinct partners (Starlight Express, Kidzone, and Radio Lollipop), Hospital Committee members, children and their families (including parents and siblings), and staff of Level 6 at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, the project has been led by Dr Jen Seevinck from the QUT Design Lab, with design work by HEAL HDR Intern Kirsten Baade., and support from Professor Evonne Miller (co-Director of HEAL) and HEAL Project Manager (Engagement) Gillian Ridsdale.

What was the process?

Two co-design workshops were held with Entertainment Precinct partners and Hospital Committee members. In the first, wayfinding and potential ways of identifying how to find each of the partners were the key discussion points. In the second, detailed designs were presented and engagement strategies were workshopped.

What were the outcomes?

New wayfinding signage has been designed for the space, and will be installed soon.
