Research Areas
We are studying Human-Building Interactions through 3 themes; building performance, environmental behaviour, and interaction
- The building performance theme focuses on human comfort in spaces, and how the design of buildings impacts comfort and well-being. We correlate measures of the built environment (visual, thermal, air quality) with people’s perceptions and adaptive responses to it.
- The environmental behavior theme focuses on the relationship between human health and well-being and the design of buildings and the physical environment. Using environmental psychology theory and concepts and an understanding of human behavior, we can look at whether the buildings we inhabit are health-promoting. This theme may include research on views of nature, access to the outdoors, gathering spaces for social engagement, and building context in relation to accessibility and active travel
- The interaction theme focuses on questioning how can we interact with and make HBI-related data responsible, visible, and usable by designers and occupants. This theme supports the design and development of interactive and responsive built environment elements through design visualization, physical prototyping, the embedding of sensors, and material explorations required to address the needs of diverse HBI applications and challenges.
