Cody Phillips is a Ph.D. graduate within QUT’s Games Research and Interaction Design Lab. His research explores the intersection of people and play, and seeks to translate games user research theories into actionable game design principles. Cody’s Ph.D. explored the types of rewards that exist in commercial games, and how those reward types impact the player experience.

Leveraging his background in game design and software development, Cody collaborates on a range of research projects. To date, Cody has been involved with projects investigating the ethical use of gamification, the use of biofeedback in online games, measuring flow in games, the impact of social play in both online and augmented reality games, the use of psychophysiological instruments to assess the player experience, the physiological response of rewards in games, and the design and development of games for young children with cystic fibrosis.

Beyond the domain of games user research, Cody provides programming support to QUT’s School of Psychology and Counselling, and is a gamification consultant for the app development studio Eat More Pixels.
