Dr MacAndrew is a RN with experience across many clinical settings; including emergency nursing, care of children with special needs, dental surgery and most recently aged and dementia care. With a passion for improving quality of life and quality of care for people with dementia, particularly in residential aged care, Margaret made a career change in 2010 and took a position as a research assistant and later a project manager with the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre, and a sessional academic at QUT. As the recipient of the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre: Carers and Consumers Masters by Research Scholarship, she commenced postgraduate studies, articulating to a PhD in 2012 after receiving an Australian Postgraduate Award. During her PhD she conducted a descriptive study of a potentially hazardous aspect of dementia-related wandering, boundary transgression or locomotion that takes the person who wanders into out of bounds or hazardous areas. Previously this aspect of wandering had not been studied and there are currently no evidence based strategies to manage this behaviour in residential aged care. After completing her PhD in December 2014 she took a Lecturer position in the School of Nursing and has developed her independant program of research that focuses on improving the safety of people with dementia through non-pharmacological interventions, better assessment and person centred care planning.Additional information
