About Eco-Explorations

Eco-Explorations is a QUT Faculty of Science project that blends science education and community engagement to ignite a passion for STEM. By leveraging virtual reality, participants will explore environments such as the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Through this, they will experience simulated conservation scenarios and discussions that will encourage preservation, habitat restoration, as well as species protection. Eco-Explorations is funded by the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation through the Engaging Science Grants Program.

Project Aim

The Eco-Explorations project aims to spark an interest in STEM subjects among students by providing an innovative and interactive educational experience. Subsequently this ties into the cross-curriculum priority of Sustainability, showing students how STEM subjects intersect with real-world issues.

By focusing on captivating subjects like the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, the project draws on students’ natural curiosity about the world. We believe the use of Virtual Reality (VR) provides an immersive experience that can make STEM not only more accessible, but also more enjoyable.

The project will also introduce students to scientific concepts and technologies used by professionals in conservation and ecotourism. Following this, the hope is that the project inspires them to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Outcomes Of Eco-Explorations

The outcomes of the Eco-Explorations project are multifaceted, designed to yield benefits across educational, environmental, and socio-economic spheres.

  • Educational Enhancement: We anticipate an increase in STEM engagement among high school students. This will be evidenced by their active participation, awareness of ecological sustainability efforts, as well as an improved interest in related subjects in their school curriculum.
  • Conservation Awareness: The project aims to elevate community awareness about not only the local endangered species but also the critical importance of preserving Queensland’s unique ecosystems.
  • Ecotourism Promotion: By highlighting the beauty and ecological importance of Queensland’s natural landmarks in VR. This will contribute to the conservation of these areas that support local economies.
  • Community Engagement: We aim to create inclusive educational opportunities, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for environmental stewardship.

Overall, the project’s key objectives are to educate, inspire, and mobilize a community of environmentally conscious individuals. Furthermore, these individuals will be equipped to make informed decisions and actions towards preserving our natural world for future generations.
