Project information

This page has information to help you decide if you want to be involved in this project.
Please watch the video or read the transcript below to learn more.

Who is doing this project?
There are three people in the research team and we are all from QUT. There is me, Claire Ting, and my two supervisors, Dr Sofia Mavropoulou and Dr Jill Willis. Because this is my PhD project I will be the one you will talk to, and my supervisors will also look at the answers I get from the interviews.

What is the purpose of the research?
We want to understand what high school assessment is like for students with dyslexia, and how their assessment experiences could be better.

Are you looking for people like me?
We are interested in talking to students with dyslexia who go to high school in Queensland.

What will you ask me to do?
Your participation will involve these steps:

1.  You will complete the consent form. Get your parent or carer to complete the consent form too.
2.  I will contact you or your parent/carer to:

    • confirm your details, and
    • schedule your video call.
3.  You will meet me on Zoom or Teams at a convenient time. We will talk about your experiences with assessment at school. The call will take up to an hour.

4.   You will be invited to join another video call on a different day. This second call will be with a focus group of between 3 and 6 students who have also done the same interview. In the group call I will share what I found out from the interviews and discuss your ideas about how to improve the assessment experiences of high school students with dyslexia. This will take 45 minutes.

The focus group call is optional. Even if you do the interview, you do not have to join a focus group unless you want to.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?
It is possible that talking about your personal experiences could make you feel uncomfortable. You will not have to talk about anything that you don’t want to talk about. You don’t have to answer all the questions. You can leave the interview at any time. Whatever you share with me in the interview is completely your choice.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?
You might not directly benefit from being interviewed. We hope that the answers we get from the interviews will benefit high school students with dyslexia in general.

Will I be compensated for my time?
Yes, you will receive a $30 Ultimate Students gift card to thank you.

I am interested. What should I do next?
Before signing the consent form you and your parent/carer will need to download, read, and save the participant information sheets. These are linked at the bottom of the page.
