Kim Osman is a researcher at the Digital Media Research Centre at QUT. Her research centres on the creation and sharing of knowledge on digital media platforms, with a particular interest in open and collaborative spaces. Kim uses digital tools and qualitative methods to explore how people participate in online knowledge sharing communities. She is interested in the informal learning that occurs on a variety of different digital media platforms, from Facebook to MOOCs, and how to better understand the dynamics of access to, and participation in, these spaces. Kim is currently researching the role of digital comedy in engaging young men with information about healthy sexual development and on another project, examining the role of amplifier platforms like ‘The Conversation’ in engaging the public with scholarly content. Kim also coordinates the DMRC’s MOOC on FutureLearn, Social Media Analytics: Using Data to Understand Public Conversations along with teaching in the Creative Industries faculty. Kim’s background is in communications and policy for the voluntary sector in the UK and Australia and she has run a number of campaigns for engaging young people with volunteering and community service.
