DMRC academic wins article of the year award

The National Communication Association’s Visual Communication Division announced in September that QUT academic Dr TJ Thomson is the winner of the 2022 James Edwards Article of the Year Award.

Dr Thomson won the honour for an article, “International, innovative, multimodal and representative? The geographies, methods, modes and aims present in two visual communication journals” he wrote and published in Visual Communication.

The study analysed 544 research articles over a 25-year span to identify which countries and geographic regions have received attention, which methods and means were used to advance the authors’ arguments, and which types of visuals were studied. In doing so, the study identifies areas for potential future exploration and proposes ways that journals and journal editors can be more inclusive and innovative in the scholarship they publish.

NCA reviewers called the study “ambitious and thought-provoking” and praised its scale and potential for impact.

Dr Thomson has been invited to join the Association’s annual conference in November 2022, in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, where the award will be officially conferred.
