Join us at South Bank to hear from TikTok creators, journalists and researchers about the impacts of digital media on our lives. Get involved with hands on activities and ask our experts a question about social and digital media.
10am – 11am Activity session 1
Digital Child Play Zone: Drop-in Zone – Art robots (2 – 8 year olds)
Create your own robot assisted art and talk to our researchers about implications of these technologies for learning. Bring your robot to life with Augmented Reality (AR) technology
Teen/Adult zone: AI meets Art
Create your own original art using an artificial intelligence text-image generator. Share your art with the world (or just your friends) and talk with our experts about the implications of these new technologies for society.
11am – 12pm PANEL 1: Tik Tok, more than a dance app
Join successful Brisbane-based TikTok creators in conversation with Dr Aleesha Rodriguez: vlogger Lolly Dove, DMRC PhD student Xuan Li, comedians Ian Zaro and Zach Mander. With a combined 2.3 million followers, these local TikTok creators will provide insights into their experience of creating content for social media audiences.
12pm – 1pm Activity session 2
Digital Child Play Zone: Drop-in Zone – Robots in action (2 – 8 year olds)
Explore how a robot carries out your commands. Explore movement and control with robots to navigate a maze or complete a journey.
Teen/Adult zone: TikTok Talent Quest
Explore the art of TikToking in this fun interactive activity where you will explore one of the fastest growing social media platforms. Talk with our digital media experts about this and other popular social media platforms, from how they enable new forms of cultural expression, to how they surveil and use our personal data.
1pm – 2pm PANEL 2: Are digital media taking over our lives?
The ABC’s Rosie Ryan and will be joined by Rhianna Patrick, Jean Burgess, Tim Graham and Ruari Elkington. Rhianna is a freelance Torres Strait Islander journalist, broadcaster and audio content creator with 25 years’ experience in news, TV documentaries and radio. Professor Jean Burgess, Associate Professor Tim Graham and Dr Ruari Elkington are researchers in the Digital Media Research Centre.
2pm – 3pm Activity session 3
Digital Child Play Zone: Drop-in Zone – Games and Avatars (2 – 8 year olds)
Create your own digital interactive game or an avatar.
Teen/Adult zone: Misinformation and Mischief
Learn from our leading experts how to spot fake and misleading information online, and play a fun interactive game to put your skills to the test.
