In many ways, 2020 has been the year of information disorder. Beginning with the Australian bushfires, then COVID-19, followed by the Black Lives Matter protests, there has been a global surge of mis- and disinformation. During COVID-19, the problem is so rampant that the World Health Organisation termed it an ‘infodemic’. Blame is swiftly attributed to the usual suspects: bots, trolls, Russian interference. Yet, evidence from research suggests the roots of mis- and disinformation are more complicated. This presentation explores the factors and actors that govern information disorder during COVID-19, drawing on my current research with colleagues in the DMRC.
