CreateX is back for 2018 with another immersive festival of performances, exhibitions, fashion shows, screenings and panel discussions. Held at the Creative Industries Precinct, Kelvin Grove from 13-17 November, this event is presented by QUT Creative Industries and is a collaboration between QUT’s emerging creatives, researchers and industry partners. CreateX explores innovation and disruption in the creative industries and seeks to challenge, inspire and drive what it means to design, create and communicate in the twenty-first century.

This year, CreateX will feature Is Being a YouTuber a Real Job?

There is a broad fascination with the possibility of ‘giving up your day job’ to make money from YouTube. Stories of people coming from obscurity to earn fame and fortune producing videos for online audiences are now commonplace.

But how possible is it, really, to make a living from YouTube? What are the major obstacles and opportunities? What rights and responsibilities do YouTube creators have? What risks do they face? More broadly, what are the implications for Brisbane and Queensland’s creative communities?

This panel discussion will bring leading YouTube scholar Jean Burgess, Director of the DMRC, together with leading Australian YouTubers Elly Awesome and Madison Lloyd from Sketchshe to ask:  Is being a YouTuber a real job? To register, go to the CreateX website.
