PhD (Queensland University of Technology)

Roles and Responsibilities I am an Associate Professor within the School of Computer Science (CS), QUT, where I co-direct the CLEVAR research group - www.clevar.org. Since 2016 I have been the course coordinator of the Bachelor of Games and Interactive Environments (BGIE) at QUT.  I have been teaching computer graphics and games capstone project units since the mid-nineties. I am one of the staff members who helped create the original QUT BGIE degree in 2007. Education History/Qualification PhD, QUT (Queensland University of Technology) 1998 – 2002 Bachelor (Hons 1), La Trobe University, Computing 1992 – 1995 Bachelor of Applied Science, La Trobe University, Computing, 1987 – 1989 List of Professional and Academic Positions Held Senior Lecturer, QUT, Brisbane, 2005-2020 Post-Doctoral Fellow, Faculty of IT, QUT, Brisbane, 2002-2005 Associate Lecturer, School of Computing, La Trobe University, Bendigo, 1990-1997 Specialties: Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Computer Graphics, Visualisation, Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Virtual Environments, Business Process Management. Summary of Research My main research interests are in the area of immersive technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR).  I summarize this research in the phrase "Dasein Science" -- the science of being there (from the German ontological phrase "dasein", "there being").  I seek to understand how immersion and presence (dasein) influences humans.  In short, my research question is: "How can VR or AR environments enhance human cognition?" Experimental results have shown that VR enhances memory recall [1],  I wish to further explore how these cognitive effects influence human cognition through an embodied cognition lens.  Many application domains in the areas of knowledge management, simulation, training, education and gaming will benefit from this work. At present I am researching the use of such systems in intellectual disability training [2], business process elicitation [3], training [4] and modelling [5], and environmental knowledge elicitation [6].
