Dean Brough, Head of Studies (School of Design) and Senior Fashion Lecturer, is a highly experienced educational and industry fashion professional with the ability to explore, resolve and fabricate new apparel designs.  His applied research is centred on the intersection of health and design, with a focus on performance and protective apparel for sub-tropical climates. Dean is also currently investigating bio-textiles – creating textiles from living bacteria to potentially grow your own apparel.

Alongside this, Dean has also investigated threshold positions for design innovation – the creative practice from this research received a Design Institute of Australia Award. His creative practice has been exhibited at numerous prestigious art and design venues, both nationally and internationally, including Queensland Art Gallery, ARC Biennial and Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival. Dean has also recently acted as a legal industry expert witness for a national landmark case for fashion copyright and is a Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency TEQSA external expert.

Dean has widespread experience in digital applications for the fashion industry, including highly proficient skills in computer aided pattern design, computer aided pattern grading, computer based graphics (including print development) and industry based digital embroidery programs. He also has extensive experience in fashion production, including stretch-wear manufacture, tailoring, and production resolution for bespoke complex designs. Dean has a diverse design and fabrication background including an early career as a watchmaker, and with this unique suite of skill sets, fields such as wearable technology provide an innovative space for design experimentation.
