Full title: The safety and effect of dietary fibre and probiotics on lower gastrointestinal issues in people having chemotherapy: The FiPro study.
Project dates:
Commenced: 2023
Completion Due: 2027
During cancer treatment approximately 70% of people suffer from lower gastrointestinal issues, such as constipation and diarrhoea, which are distressing and reduce quality of life. There is evidence for the benefit of dietary fibre and probiotics in managing and preventing lower gastrointestinal issues in healthy individuals; however, evidence exploring the benefits in people undergoing chemotherapy is lacking.
The aim of this research project is to investigate the safety and effect of dietary fibre and probiotic supplementation on lower gastrointestinal symptoms in adults undergoing chemotherapy. This non-pharmacological approach has the potential to optimise cancer treatment outcome as well as provide evidence to develop future research and clinical practice.
