The EMINENT Trial

Implementing a nurse-coordinated, integrated, shared-care model involving specialists and general practitioners in breast cancer post-treatment follow-up: a Phase 2 randomised control trial.

Project dates:
Commenced: 2019
Completion Due: 2023

In Australia, breast cancer is the most common cancer in females. Breast cancer survivors require survivorship care including:

  • The prevention of cancer recurrence
  • Surveillance for secondary or new primary cancers
  • Management of a range of long-term bio-psycho-social effects from their cancer diagnosis and treatment.

These health concerns can be highly burdensome on the individual and the health system, and highlight the need for well-integrated, shared follow-up care models for early breast cancer involving cancer specialists and general practitioners.

Aims:
This Phase 2 randomised controlled trial aims to test the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of the EMINENT intervention for implementing an integrated, shared-care model involving cancer specialists and general practitioners for early breast cancer post-treatment follow-up care. Trial outcomes include health-related quality of life, a range of patient-reported outcomes, safety indicators, and process outcomes.

Project outcomes:
This study has the capacity to demonstrate the feasibility, acceptability, and usefulness of a new model of care which could influence future post-treatment care for cancer survivors.
